Traditionally muslins were used on newborn babies - and are still ideal for those early days and weeks when nothing shaped and fitted fits and terries are far too bulky. Pad fold or traditionally fold - these days a close fitting hook and loop fastening fastening wrap will hold them in place without a pin. Can also be used later on as boosters, or for general purpose mopping and wiping duties. Can also be dyed to disguise their former use when used as mopping cloths! Ideal for newborns, this size nappy is best for pad folding, however you may choose to traditionally fold: we recommend a Nappi Nippa to fasten terries without pins. Made from a quality white terry towelling weight 450g per sq metre, this nappy has angelique satin binding, is very absorbent and holds its shape well. Bamboo Prefolds by Nappy Nation

These prefolds have two layers of lovely soft white bamboo terry fabric on the side panels and three layers on the middle panel. They are an excellent night nappy as bamboo absorbs 60% more water than cotton, so are relatively slim for the absorbency. These also make excellent stuffers for pouched nappy systems.

Bamboo has hardly any impact on the environment; it thrives naturally without the use of pesticides. Bamboo fabric is antibacterial by nature, even after 100 washes the bamboo fibre still possesses its anti bacterial properties.

These are one of the softest, silkiest nappies and absorbent prefolds on the market.

These 'Industrial' prefolds are made from woven cotton. They are thicker than most small prefolds available in this country, being 4 layers and the centre panel 8 layers thick. Once washed they will shrink a little and fluff up to give a waffled appearance, and become very absorbent.

Kooshies Prefolds
Slim prefolds, made in Canada of soft brushed flannelette, 2 x4x2 - so not especially absorbent, but ideal for newborns, small babies, slim babies and lighter wetters up to about 20-25lb max. These make good burping/mopping up cloths too, and many choose the patterned ones to line a changing mat as they are so soft.

Approximate size 49 x 30cm, it must be remembered that these Kooshies prefolds are not as absorbent as the woven prefolds. You will probably find for larger babies and heavy wetters that you may need to use two together, also they are small so won't fit round chubby/bigger babies so you'll need to pad fold. Many babies will have outgrown these by about 1 year to 18 months.

Bambeasy by Easy Peasy

Bambeasy is a nappy made in the UK by Easy Peasy Nappies to the same style as the Bimble and Bumble in soft long loop Bamboo terry (90% bamboo, 10% polyamide for strength), with a 100% polyester fleece inner layer.

The nappy is two layers with a two layer flap that folds out to aid the drying process, and a fleece inner layer under which the flap can tuck.

The size 0 (pictured previous page) is a little nappy is ideally suited to newborns and fits up to about 15lb (6.5kg) max, and can be easily reduced in height buy folding the front over outwards to make a smaller nappy for premature/small babies (or twins). Designed to fit underneath baby clothes it is slim and close fitting, as well as reasonably good on containment, yet the bamboo affords better absorbency although slimmer than the cotton terry Bimble. This is a great first nappy for newborns as it is so slim. Afterwards progress to the Size 2 or another one size nappy, or to a larger sized bulkier nappy with more absorbency. The nappy is secured with Nappi Nippas or pins (available separately), or is available with poppers. The nippa version will give best containment.

The Birth to Potty (BTP) Bambeasy (pictured left) is designed as a birth to potty nappy and is made to the same style as the Bumble, having a removable snap in booster. Once removed, the front of the Bambeasy may be poppered down inside the fleece inner lining to reduce the height to make a smaller nappy to fit from birth. As the bamboo fabric is slimmer than cotton, this makes a less bulky nappy for a newborn, yet will also fit to potty (up to 35lb+/16kg+). Again this is available without fastening for use with a Nappi Nippa, or with popper fastening.

Suggested wraps include So Simple Snap, Rikki, Air Flow, Popo, Vento, Nature Babies, Litewrap, Bumpy, Imse Soft, any pull on pant, wool or fleece wrap.

Both these nappies are slower to dry than their cotton variants, however as the seams are oversewn rather than turned and topstitched, and the flaps open out they are quicker to dry than the Bamboozle. These nappies may be tumble dried, although in the interests of longevity it is not recommended that you dry for too long on too hot a heat (over dry) but remove as soon as they are dry, as this can affect the softness of this fabric and may also affect the loop pile for attaching Nappi Nippas to secure.

The Bamboo Loveable is a neat slim nappy that is available either as a two size nappy giving a neat, trim fit or a one size nappy to fit from birth to potty, made in the UK from soft bamboo terry.

The design is only two layers thick, with overlocked seams and an opening at the back into which the detached two layer bamboo booster (plus additional boosting if required) can be stuffed, meaning it is not the slowest to dry of the bamboo nappies we stock.

It can be easily reduced in height by folding the front over outwards to make a smaller nappy for premature/small babies (or twins)

It is elasticated at waist and thigh and fastens neatly with Aplix hook and loop fastening, with an overlap at the waist to give good containment and a trim fit.

Bimble QD is the quicker drying version of the Bimble, with a flap that folds out to aid the drying process. It is a little nappy is ideally suited to newborns, and can be easily reduced in height buy folding the front over outwards to make a smaller nappy for premature/small babies (or twins). Designed to fit underneath baby clothes it is slim and close fitting, as well as good on containment. A great first nappy before progressing to a one size nappy or a larger sized bulkier nappy with more absorbency. It comes in one size only (small) to fit from birth up to about 6-9m maximum (15-18lb). MicroDiddy by Nature Babies

An even quicker drying alternative to the Diddy Diaper. Made of white microfibre terry, this nappy is absorbent, yet dries relatively quickly (exact speed depends on efficiency of your washing machine's spin !). Lined with two layers of soft (white) cotton jersey (as in Tshirts) for comfort (the microfibre can be a little tacky and scratchy) - it remains soft even in hard water. Without fastenings for use with a Nappi Nippa, available in 2 sizes as the Diddy Diaper.

The smaller size is ideal for a first nappy, or for small/premature babies where a non-bulky nappy is needed. Imse Diaper (Organic)

Suggested Minimum Quantity: 5x4 = £99 + 4 wraps per size, later on two nappies may be used together or you may additionally need boosters for extra absorbency that is usally required for older babies.

Alternatively you may choose 2 x pack of 4 flannelette diaper plus 3 x pack of 4 Imse Organic Terry = £146.80 + 4 wraps per size (see Shaped Nappy section for details of the Organic Terry, it is thicker and more absorbent than the flannelette Imse Diaper, and also has elastic at the legs).

This is a Swedish one size soft brushed 100% natural organic cotton flannelette nappy, which can be folded to fit from new-born to potty training. Simply fold over the back (and front too if required) to reduce the height of this nappy, then wrap the flaps round baby and do up the wrap. It is a very slim fitting non-bulky nappy, and very suitable for newborns.

The nappy is very soft and extremely popular amongst my local customers as they think it feels the nicest! The nappy has a thicker central strip with extra layers of flannelette for extra absorbency, and an inner flap again of several thicknesses. The inner flap can be folded to suit boy/girl, and unfolds for easier drying. Generally this nappy is easier than a prefold as this nappy can usually be held together with one hand whilst putting the wrap on, although it is not as easy as a popper or Velcro nappy. This nappy is slim-fitting and yet surprisingly absorbent, although booster liners recommended for nights/heavy wetters. I often used two together at night for increased absorbency, and although bulkier it is still quite slim compared to a night time terry with boosters. Wash at 60ºC or 95ºC and tumble dry on hot. Line drying is medium/fast.

Winner of Bra Miljoval award, also approved by Swedish Nature society for the purity of the cotton. Made to a very high standard.

This is a very popular but quirky looking nappy and purchasers of one of these nappies often return for more! The recently improved nappy now has gentle elastication at the legs for a better fit, and is made from organic cotton.

Wraps are required. Suggested wraps include Imse Vimse Bumpy, Soft Wrap or Wool wraps, or Prorap, Rikki wrap, Tots wrap. If not using a close fitting hook and loop fastening wrap as listed, these nappies will need pinning to secure.

Kissaluvs Size 0 is ideal for newborns where a neat, close fitting nappy is required from day 1 that is very good on containment. It has a unique snap-down front for umbilical cord area protection, so you do not have a nappy rubbing the cord area. Two rows of snaps give an adjustable rise, especially important for the fast growth of a newborn, Soft, stretchy elastic at the legs and back contains messes and floods.

short loop cotton pile terry nappy, with multi position side popper fastenings at waist and thigh allows for a good fit and adjustability. This Canadian nappy is made of 85% cotton knitted stretch terry towelling with 15% polyester (in the base weave of the fabric for longevity and reduction of shrinkage, the pile being cotton, so that is next to your baby's skin).

This nappy is elasticised all round the waist and legs to ensure a good fit. Wash at 60ºC and tumble dry on hot. Line drying is medium/slow due to the extra padding between the legs, which makes this a nice absorbent nappy. You can add boosters for nights as required. The popper fastenings are good at resisting small fingers where velcro doesn't! You may find that the sizing on these is on the small side, and it may be possible to entirely by-pass the L size by progressing directly from Small to XLarge as the XL ('Toddle-ease' ) will usually fit from about 22-24lb (particularly chunkier babies). The newborn XS size is suitable for small or premature babies, particularly those of skinny build: the majority of babies will not need this size.
