The MOONCUP

The Mooncup is a comfortable, cost effective and enviromentally friendly alternative to disposable tampons. Worn internally, the Mooncup collects menstrual fluid without leakage or odour. The Mooncup is reusable for at least 10 years, and each woman only needs one.

The Mooncup is a bell shape cup around two inches long, made from soft medical grade non-allergic silicone. Silicone is a natural compond derived from sandstone, it will not cause irritation and is suitable for women who have an allergy to rubber products. The Mooncup will hold around an ounce of fluid which is approximately one third of the average total produced each period. You will probably find you have to empty the Mooncup less frequently than you may change towels or tampons, many people find they can spend all day at work without having to empty it - a boon if you don't know where the next loo is.

Another advantage of the Mooncup over tampons is comfort when inserting - the smooth silicon slips softly in compared to the dragging action of dry, compacted tampons which tend to adhere to you as you insert.

The Mooncup is cleaned the same way as baby equipment, by boiling, sterilising with steam or with fluid, or even washed in the dishwasher! (Of course we recommend you wash it well first!)

Correctly inserted, the Mooncup is very comfortable and will only need emptying, rinsed or wiped and reinserted every four to twelve hours depending on your flow. The fluid remains inside the cup, and the process is not messy or uncomfortable. You may use your Mooncup safely overnight, for sports, swimming or travelling.

It's quite easy to insert. I think it perhaps looks quite daunting, but in fact all you need do is squeeze the soft sides together at the bell end, then fold in half to make it smaller and insert, when you let go of the ends, they spring back into shape, a quick downward pull with a slight twist forms a good seal. To remove you just squeeze the sides of the base to break the seal and with a slight twist it pulls out very easily. I find the Mooncup far easier to insert than a tampon - which seems to dry up as you put it in and is then rather uncomfortable, whereas you really do not notice the Mooncup as it is so soft and comfortable immediately it is inserted as it moulds to fit you snugly.

Your Mooncup has a short 'stem' at the end for you to grip to insert and to remove. However for most people this is supplied too long, and should carefully be trimmed to the most comfortable length to suit you (best snip if a little piece at a time to ensure you can still easily grip the base of the Mooncup).

The Mooncup is available in two shapes for best fit: Model A for women who have given birth vaginally or are over 30, and Model B for women who have not given birth vaginally and are under 30. Additionally If you feel you tend to have slack vaginal muscles and perhaps take super plus tampons for the fit rather than the absorbency yet are under 30 but also haven't given birth then the Size A may be best for you. Please consider the above information and take care to ensure you order correctly.
